The Australian Museum is well-known for its natural history and science collection, but it also hosts all sorts of travelling exhibitions that showcase the ancient and historical world. At the moment, until late February, they are hosting the
Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru exhibition. This new travelling exhibition is exclusive to Sydney and features more than 130 Andean artefacts in a multi-sensory experience that brings the history of this area to life.

The Incas and Machu Picchu are fascinating and are part of a rich heritage and captivating civilisation, one that is interesting and filled with royalty, tombs, human sacrifice, and grandeur.
The Incan Empire developed in the Andean region during the 12th century and flourished until 1572 following the Spanish invasion. It’s a civilisation that didn’t last long but still had a significant impact on the region and culture that still thrives in some ways, based on some of what this exhibition discusses. Gaining this unique glimpse into the opulent history of the Andean people is immersive and puts the Incas and Andean culture into a new light, and puts it in front of people who are interested and people who may not have known much about them until now.

This acts as an immersive educational experience that either introduces people to the fascinating world of the Incas or allows you to explore a new facet of this civilisation and build on what you know. The 130 ancient artefacts included in this exhibition include jewellery, funerary objects from tombs, and gold that will tour the globe, stopping in select cities for several months at a time. It’s a Sydney exclusive as well.

The artefacts are priceless and highlight the artistic ability and the cultural sophistication of ancient Peru to give visitors a great insight into this culture, from the daily lives of the people to the beliefs and their extraordinary achievements, as you get to marvel at the wonders of Machu Picchu, which is known as the pinnacle of Incan engineering amidst the mysteries of ancient Peruvian society whose innovations keep us in awe today.
And, there is a small side area of the exhibition that showcases erotic ceramic artefacts that highlight a fascination with life, death and birth and all its cycles.
To get more insights, grab the souvenir book at the end of the exhibition.
