The beautiful little country town of Macclesfield is a welcoming destination after a lovely drive through the Adelaide Hills, either via Clarendon in the south and Meadows, or from the freeway, via Stirling or Hahndorf. It features two distinctive hotels and is situated not from some world-class wineries, notably Longview.

But the best-kept secret is the once-a-month market, a perfect destination for a Sunday drive in the hills. It's open in the stately old stone Macclesfield Hall on the first Sunday of the month, from 9 am until 2 pm. You can shop for crafts, fresh produce, have lunch, coffee, a beer or three and have time to explore the region some more, knowing that home is less than an hour away for most.

"The Macclesfield Community Association were looking to revamp the market and change it from weekly to monthly when COVID first hit," market manager Sandy Bartlett tells me. "The first market back last August was a great day with people enjoying the opportunity to get out and about, get some retail therapy whilst still maintaining COVID regulations. The market has a really lovely vibe with Kat Raynor providing some great tunes while visitors can enjoy a morning coffee and something to eat."

"The market has a friendly atmosphere," Sandy says. "Being a small market it is a more personal experience for market visitors. People also enjoy that it is predominantly inside the heritage 'Maccy' hall, which means that it is always on regardless of the weather and is comfortable for both visitors and stallholders."

Morning tea and lunch is available in the hall's kitchen, courtesy of Lilit, of Lilit's Hamov Kitchen. Lilit is Armenian and her sweets and savouries all come from her grandmother's extensive recipe book and feature unique sweet and savoury flavours that reflect their origins from not only Armenia, but also Russia and the Middle East. 'Hamov' means 'tasty' in Armenian. Taste for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

The kitchen includes a comfortable café area to enjoy delicacies like these extremely more-ish cakes.

The produce on offer is grown by the people who sell it.

Likewise, the crafts available are sold by their creators.

And if you are a lover of crafts with a partner who needs to be parked somewhere while you consider what is on offer, Anthony is here to help, with his uniquely crafted Silver Bark beers. There is a craft for everyone.

Maccy market is not hard to find. It is a little gem in the hills and well worth discovering.
