Fri 29 Mar 2024 - Sun 31 Mar 2024

The Ma and Pa Bendall Surfing Contest will celebrate its 50th Anniversary in 2024 over the Easter long weekend from 29 to 31 March 2024 at Moffat Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Who are Ma and Pa Bendall?
So impactful were two Sunshine Coast locals that they pioneered and changed the fabric of surfing on the Sunshine Coast. They have even had a surfing competition named after them.

Majorie and Charles Bendall, who lived in Caloundra's Harmony Lodge in Bulcock Beach in the 1950s, were pioneers of the surfing movement on the Sunshine Coast. Pa Bendall formed the first invitation-only surfing fraternity in Australia known as the Moffateers in 1966. With surfing being largely considered young person's past time, Charles and Majorie broke the mould by surfing in their 50s which was groundbreaking at the time.

Pa and Ma Bendall were in their 50s when they started to surf during the early 1960s which was unheard of at that time. Their residence, Harmony Lodge, was located right across the road from Bulcock Beach where Ma owned and managed Harmony Flats, adjacent to their residence Harmony Lodge. They were also amateur film-makers and captured rare footage of surfing which has become archival and historically significant pieces.

Surfing, Music and Multiculturalism
Now the Windan Sea Board riders will be hosting the 50th Anniversary of their annual Ma and Pa Bendall Easter long weekend surfing competition alongside the Festuri: Surf and Sea Multicultural Festival.

This free community Festival of music and dance will coincide with the backdrop of some gnarly surfing on the point of Moffat Beach. FESTURI Music Festival (aka The Surf and Sea Multicultural Festival) will be featured from the 30th (12 p.m.–9 p.m.) to the 31st of March (12 p.m.–4 p.m.) with entertainment of many varied multicultural performers. There will also be a multicultural fashion parade.

What Else
If you would like to bring some surfing sport to your Easter, the competition and Festival will be situated alongside the Queen of the Colonies Avenue at Moffat Beach. Moffat Beach lies between Moffat Head and Tooway Lake in Caloundra and is 104 kilometres from Brisbane.

Free parking is available but you will need to be quick to get a spot. The surfing competition runs between 7am and 4pm daily.
