Innovative world premiere theatre
La Boite and QUT Creative Industries Production are presenting the world premiere of Claire Christian's contemporary and innovative play, Lysa and the Freeborn Dames, from 21 July to 11 August 2018 at the Roundhouse Theatre, at Kelvin Grove.
The play is a feminist response to Aristophanes' Lysistrata, reputedly the original battle of the sexes. It is set on 21 January 2017, when women all over the world amassed to protest against a Trump-led free world. Lysa King is an angry nineteen-year-old young woman who has come home to her small rural Australian town after a year away, where she has seen the revolution happen around the world in the guise of-of the Women's Marches. Lysa leads a local protest on the biggest night of the year, The War Weekender, a night of booze and football.
We are anger meeting action,
Strike a match – a fire's lit.
Political has to be practical,
Can't believe we're still protesting this …
But only three of her friends and a young policeman show up to the protest rally. Will Lysa remain staunch in her protest for progress and risk her long-standing relationships? Come and find out.
Lysa and the Freeborn Dames features some of Queensland's brightest emerging talents, with QUT Bachelor of Fine Arts Final Year Acting students completing the QUT Creative Industries co-production, led by a "fierce" female chorus including Amy Ingram and Hsiao-Ling Tang.
This show promises to be a "hilarious, messy, and glitter-filled response to the power of women globally" (LaBoite website). Tickets are $30-60. Book athttps://laboite.com.au/lysa-and-the-freeborn-dames
