Irish author Cecelia Ahern has penned yet another beautiful story in Lyrebird. The 414 pages first published in 2016 contain a many layered love story that which is almost a modern day fairy tale. Lyrebird is a lyrical work of fiction about a young girl with remarkable vocal talents who has lived a hidden life.

A chance discovery catapults the heroine Laura Button and her magical mimicry into the worst aspects of the modern world. The characters are beautifully drawn and the language is evocative of place, the isolation of the farmhouse contrasts with the frenetic city. Although set in the present day, the story has an olde worlde feel and gentleness to much of the story.

The new life that she has been seeking becomes claustrophobic as her celebrity status creates a new cage for her. This results in the loss of her talents and newfound confidence. The question remains - wil true love set 'Lyrebird' free and is she really as innocent and naive as she initially seems.

I enjoyed this story but many would find some of the characters unsympathetic and weak-willed. Themes of love, jealousy, greed and celebrity are investigated. The premise is quite far-fetched but I believe you will enjoy Lyrebird if you relax and treat it like a magical fairy tale.
