If you can dodge your way past all the waiters trying to pull you into their restaurants, and you don't give up and go for ice-cream (sorry, gelati) instead, Lygon Food Store (between Faraday Street and Grattan Street) is a great little place for a casual breakfast or lunch in Carlton. This is an Italian cafe that doesn't feel touristy.

They have a deli section with a huge range of cheeses and meats.

And a decent array of European products available for purchase.

You can eat in or takeaway here. For $8, I had a freshly made ciabatta with bocconcini, semi-dried tomatoes and an olive spread.
