Make your next birthday a liqueur tasting event with friends
As Australia develops into a more multi-cultured Nation food from different countries become known and availability of purchase becomes more frequent in our grocery stores. When I was a child the Lychee was virtually unknown unless you visited a Chinese Diner and the Watermelon was a fruit keenly sourced only at Christmas time.
Situated on the Bruce Highway in South Tinana, Maryborough is Lychee Divine, a visitor centre, cellar door and shop. Owned and operated by Tomarata Orchard, a family business located in Tiaro. The orchard is one of the largest suppliers of lychees to Australia and also exports to international markets. The property currently has 2,110 mature lychee trees.
Tomarata's planting programme includes new varieties; however the tried and trusted Kwai Mai Pink (B3), Wai Chee Salathiel, Sah Kan and Fay Zee Sui are grown regularly in their orchard. The orchard is covered with netting to protect from birds or flying foxes and also to assist with sun and wind damage. They adhere to SQI HACCP quality assurance system to ensure a safe and consistent product.
Their orchard season for fresh lychees is from December to February and after the season is finished, the taste of lychee can still be enjoyed in their produce which includes Lychee Dessert Sauces, Lychee Sweet Chilli Sauce, Orchard Honey, Lychee Balsamic Vinegar (dark or light), Nectarine Chutney, Zucchini Pickles, Rosella Jam. All products are gluten and preservative free using finest and freshest ingredients, which are mainly grown at the Tomarata Group. Lychee Ice Cream Tubs are also available in a variety of added flavours. I vouch for the Lychee & Coconut as it was very nice indeed.
They also stock gourmet gift products from Coolana Olives and children's books by local authors. Novelty wine holders and stoppers in sparkly colours can be purchased and would be excellent at a wedding or hen's party.
Free liqueur tasting is provided for those interested and your choice could be the smooth silky textured Tomarata Sensual Lychee Liqueur, Peach Liqueur, Sundowner Liqueur, Lychee & Ginger Liqueur or Lychee & Ginger with extra Ginger. To suit your taste suggestions are stated that your liqueurs could be drunk on their own with ice or combined with sparkling mineral water. A variety of wines are also available for tasting and purchase. If you are into cocktails, a couple of recipes for Lychee Cocktails can be located on their website.
The shop also offers Devonshire Teas between 9am and 4pm. Bookings are essential for larger groups. The shop has a wide verandah and tables and chairs set up both inside and outside. A garden surrounds the verandah, which cuts off noise from the highway and is quite private.
Lychee Divine uses a Loyalty Card system and Gift cards can also be purchased at the shop. If you do not live close, purchases can be made on their website and there is free shipping for orders over $100.00.
