Who doesn't love venturing outside into the great outdoors on a fine sunny day to enjoy a picnic? Picnics can be enjoyed in all sorts of places whether beachside, country or even suburban locations.

How would you feel if you could enjoy your picnic on the lawns of historic Government House in Adelaide? Well, now's your chance as the gates will be thrown open on the first Friday of each month for a six month period, commencing on Friday 4th November from 12 pm until 2 pm. No bookings required.

Bring your own picnic lunch and enjoy it whilst soaking in the beautiful grounds of Government House on North Terrace Adelaide.

Whilst you are enjoying your lunch, you will be entertained by music performed by some of our community bands, the first one in November scheduled to be the City of Adelaide Concert Band. You will be free to wander around the spacious gardens and grounds, and will have the chance to view the old fountain, as well as the old horse hitching post under the massive Moreton Bay Fig tree.

Also, there are two interesting sculptures in the grounds which can be viewed, one being by Margaret Worth depicting the contemporary role of the Governor, and the other, a Robert Hannaford life like work of the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth 2.In addition during each of these first Fridays in the month, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens will be conducting garden tours between 10.45 am and 11.45 am, with the added good news that they are free.

However, you will need to book a place by phoning Government House on 8203 9800 as the overall tour numbers are limited for each tour to a maximum of 15 people with three guides available, so an overall number being 45 people having the opportunity to enjoy these magnificent gardens. Tours will not be run on days when the maximum is expected to reach 36 degrees celsius or above. The spacious grounds of Government House boast some wonderful plant species including the striking palm trees either side of the front porch of the house called Washingtonia filifera, which date from the 1890s.

Some of the historic and significant trees include a Hoop Pine (1850s/1860s), a row of Peppertrees (1870s) and a Pine tree in the south-east corner which is a descendant of the "Lone Pine" at Gallipoli, planted in 1998.

The total area of the grounds within Government House amounts to a whopping 5.6 hectares so there is no issue in finding a great spot to enjoy your picnic.

It is all part of our current Governor's (Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC) desire for more members of the public to be able to visit and enjoy Government House grounds. The specific dates for your diary are Friday 4th November, Friday 2nd December, Friday 6th January (2023), Friday 3rd February, Friday 3rd March and finally Friday 14th April ( second Friday in month due to the first being Good Friday). So what are you waiting for - get out the picnic basket, rug and delicious food and beverage and imagine for a couple of hours the grounds belong to you!
