Now in its 17th year, Crown's Hawkers' Bazaar has become an annual tradition in Melbourne's Lunar New Year celebrations. It is where you will see a number of free spectacular events.

One of these is the Zodiac Spectacular. This free display in the Atrium at Crown Towers features twelve Chinese zodiac animal lanterns, with the centrepiece this year, of course, being the pig.

These colourful silk lanterns animals are created with delicate handiwork and each has a unique expression.

The animal lanterns, as with the abundance of Chinese lanterns are suspended from the ceiling, an internally lit so that the animals change colour before your eyes. This is a delightful display for children.

There will also be traditional lion dance performances on the stately staircase at the atrium from February 1-10 to chase away any bad spirits. The performances are at 7 pm and 9 pm (Feb 1-7) and 7 pm and 10.30 pm (Feb 8-10).

The Hawkers' Bazaar

The Hawker's Bazaar along Crown Riverwalk has 30 food vendors and specialty stores selling great food and oriental objects. You will also find music, acrobats, beautifully dressed oriental showgirls, magicians, Chinese opera face-changing and Cai Shen and Fu Lu Shou (Chinese deities of prosperity, happiness, and longevity) milling with the crowds. There will be over 120 performers involved in this extravaganza.

Last year Crown converted their famous flame towers into fire breathing dragons for the first time and they are doing the same this year. The five especially painted dragons come to life breathing fire into the night sky. This will happen on the hour from 9pm to midnight. And for night revellers there will be an extra performance at 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. See the video below.
