Australia's Oldest Theme Park
Now that the warm weather has finally arrived, it's time to step out and have some fun in the sun. One of the best places in Melbourne to do this, Luna Park.

With a traditional, antique carousel for the littlies (and the grown-ups), the Coney Island Top Drop, which is my personal favourite, the pirate ship, the Scenic Railway and of course, so much more. All ages and tastes are covered from the gentle sightseer to those wanting a little more thrill.

Not only are you sampling great rides, but you're experiencing something Melburnians and visitors alike have loved for over 100 years. On the 13th December 1912 Melbourne's Luna park opened to the public. One of the original attractions was the Scenic Railway, still in operation today. The face of "Mr Moon" is also one of the original facets, although it has had a few face lifts. The park closed for World War One and reopened in 1923 with some new attractions. Then during the inter war period, even more attractions were added to the park. While small changes frequently occurred, the other major changes happened in the 1980's when some of the earlier rides were demolished, mainly due to safety concerns.

Of course, there are not only the rides, but traditional carnival food as well. Sample fine fairy floss, hot chips, snow cones and hot dogs.

The park also hosts functions, including children's parties and weddings, with a function room which can seat 250.

Located in St Kilda, across the road from the tram stop, Luna Park is easily accessible from the route 96 and 16 trams. There is also meter parking nearby. It is also a close walk to St Kilda beach, Acland Street and the St Kilda botanical Gardens.

Tickets vary from peak to off peak season and at first glance can seem rather dear. Broken down, however, they are reasonable value for money. The park itself is free to enter, but tickets are needed for rides and attractions.
