Event:
Fun free parade and performance to welcome new Queenslands
Australians, and in particular Queenslanders, are a welcoming mob. The Luminous Lantern Parade at South Bank is one of the largest welcome festivals in Queensland, sending a message of welcome to new Queenslanders, including migrants, international students, refugees and asylum seekers. Beyond the political message it is also a great celebration of Brisbane's multicultural diversity, featuring music and performances from around the world.

The night, which starts at 5 pm, features a lantern parade followed by entertainment at the Cultural Forecourt. So you can turn up any time between 5 pm and 8 pm.

The parade itself kicks off at 6 pm at the Cultural Forecourt, heads up to Streets Beach along the river front, and then back again via the Arbour and past the ABC building for the concert. Anyone can join into the parade or you can watch it pass by. Personally I prefer to watch the different lanterns passing with the best location being by the river.

There are a couple of options for joining into the parade. You can carry one of the little lanterns or buy a LED candle for $2. There are also opportunities to help carry the larger lanterns carried by community groups. The earlier you get there, the easier it will be to join in.

From about 7 pm there will be entertainment at the Cultural Forecourt. So if you are arriving late, that is usually the best place to wait for the return of the lanterns. There will also be food stalls and trucks on site for dinner.

The performance will feature groups from Bolivia, Rwanda and Colombia as well as some leading Australian-based world music and dance artists. Overall it's a great family evening with a message of welcome and support for our community's diversity.
