Luke McGregor has to be one of the most self-deprecating comedians on the planet. He even has self-deprecating dreams in which he wakes from a three-month coma only to be told he has no new text messages - by his mother. He warns the audience not to go thinking he relaxes as the show goes on - he just gets worse.
And no wonder. The man has no inner monologue. Nothing about his life is off-limits - and the audience just laps it up.
Anyone who watched his ABC series Luke Warm Sex is familiar with the fact that he had sex once when he was 25 and again when he was 30 (he had a free weekend). Well hang on to your drinks, comedy festival goers - Luke McGregor now has a girlfriend. And regular sex! And still no inner monologue. The audience is welcomed into his strange world - a world of closed cupboard doors and sausage-dog phobias, of the trauma of sharing a bathroom for the first time ('Because of my self-consciousness, I like to keep an air of mystery about myself: maybe I poo, maybe I don't.')
Comedy festival season is this reviewer's favourite time of the year. The streets of our town are full of happy comedy lovers making their way to and from all manner of venues from the upmarket to the subterranean. The Comedy Theatre - a truly Melbourne venue - lies somewhere in between. The seats might flip up at unexpected moments (when you're still sitting in them) but there's lots of leg room...and a bar INSIDE THE THEATRE. It just doesn't get much better than that. Get to as many gigs as you can, including this one.
