Opening on May 17 and running for just a short season until May 27, Louisa Miller is one of Verdi's rare operas you won't often find being performed anywhere. That alone makes this one well worth your time. In fact, Opera Australia's performance of Luisa Miller is its first full professional production in over 150 years. With Melburnian Nicole Car in the title role, it's the story of a woman in love, deception, double-crossing and a very poisonous plan.
Co-produced with Opéra de Lausanne, Switzerland, directed by Giancarlo del Monaco and featuring designer William Orlandi, this production is monochromatic, stylish, glamorous and performed over three acts, delivering a very vocally demanding score. Luisa Miller follows the story of a soldier's daughter who falls in love with a man she doesn't realise is of the nobility, something that displeases both families. As the families go to extraordinary measures to separate the two, a tragic love story unfolds. Rumour has it that Verdi didn't want to write this opera, but complied only after the Naples opera house threatened to imprison his friend and librettist, Cammarano. Perhaps it's lucky he did, as it's a work of genius. With only a short running season, catch it quick!Get a peek at the trailer by clicking below:
