Looking for a cafe that magically transforms into a bar by night? There's no need to
duck out and look for some, because lucky for you, I know just the place that
fits the bill - a place that goes by the name of Lucky Duck Cafe and Bar.
Sorry for all the duck puns! Located in Highgate Hill, literally a 5 minute walk from Southbank Parklands, Lucky Duck Cafe and Bar serves organic coffee with breakfast and brunch, then cocktails and bar snacks in the evening till late, in just the one convenient location.
Upon arrival, we were greeted friendly by staff members, before being asked to choose a seat. We said we'd sit outside, because Eddy was with us, but the staff members were kind enough to ask if we'd like to sit inside, because it was a pretty chilly night. It's not often that dogs are allowed inside a restaurant, so we accepted their offer without much thought but filled with gratitude!
Lucky Duck serves all day breakfast with locally roasted coffee from
Bare Bones Espresso daily from 6:30am to 2pm. They also have cold pressed coffee (white, black, soy). The cafe food and drinks menu can be found on Lucky Duck's
website . From 11am onwards, they also sell a variety of fresh wraps and BLT. Gluten-free and vegetarian options are available upon request.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, Lucky Duck reopens at 3pm and stays open till late. Patrons who come at this time will be presented with the bar menu, which is packed to the brim with a range of bar snacks, from 'something light', to 'something more', to 'something sweet'. They also have a range of bar drinks available, including draught beer, bottled beer, red, white, sparkling, and rose wine and cocktails. If you don't see your cocktail on the menu, and don't feel up for trying something new, Lucky Duck are more than happy to prepare your cocktail of choice for you, provided they have the necessary ingredients. They also have a wide range of bar spirits, including house spirits, whisky, gin, vodka... and the list goes on.
Between three people and a dog, we decided to order a few dishes to share. We ordered the Quackamole & Corn Chips served with Lucky Duck's own seasoned salsa, Sweet Potato Fries with sour cream and sriracha, and two Canadian Waffles - waffles topped with vanilla ice cream, drizzled with maple syrup, with bacon on one and strawberries on the other. Lucky Duck also gifted Eddy with a small bowl of his own sweet potato fries - thanks Lucky Duck for making Eddy an even luckier duck than he usually is!
All the dishes were delicious, and we were surprised by how full we were considering they were more tapas style rather than a full dinner item. My favourite was probably the Sweet Potato Fries - the sour cream and sriracha was a really good blend of flavours. Eddy also loved the fries, even though he wasn't allowed to try the dip!
It is worth noting that on Thursday nights, Lucky Duck hosts Life Drawing events - "come down and chill, draw, listen to music and have a drink". The bar is open from 5:30pm, and the model starts at 6:30pm. Cost is $12 per person, and there will be food available in addition to drinks. You can secure a spot by texting 0422 371 357, or just rock up!
We had such a great time at - we came on a Sunday night, and were true lucky ducks to have the place to ourselves. We (Eddy included) received nothing but the friendliest of service, which made our night even better. To top it off, the manager of Lucky Duck told us we were only a 5 minute walk away from Southbank Parklands, so we went for a nice stroll after dinner to walk off the calories we had just consumed, which was the highlight of Eddy's night. Thanks Lucky Duck for the fantastic night, see you guys again soon!
