L'épicerie is the kind of place you dream of happening upon when visiting France. It oozes charm and ambience. As you enter you are hit with the sound of music playing typically french tunes in a lively yet cosy tea room.



It is popular amongst the trendy 20-something Lyonnais and not for no good reason - L'épicerie takes 'shabby chic' to a level of its own. From the dowdy paisley wall paper, tearing and curling away from the walls in places, to the chipped and purposefully mismatched crockery and the low hanging lamp shades giving off a dim light this charming establishment is perfect for that peckish moment between lunch and dinner during a day out in vieux Lyon or at the shops near Place Bellecour. Equally you could go to L'epicerie for brunch but don't forget to bring your friends - this place is sociable and the air is buzzing with friendly chit-chat at all times.



They specialise in cakes and desserts and pretty much anything, sweet or savory, on toast. They more elegantly called the toast 'tartines'. I had a delightful smoked salmon and cream cheese tartine which arrived with capers and lemon on the side, it hit the spot quite nicely while my friend had a pear tart which looked delicious.



It's off the well beaten tourist trail meaning the prices are more realistic compared to that of the touristy cafés in vieux Lyon just across the river. I would highly recommend this place, the food is nice but more importantly I go for the feeling you get when you're there. If you're fascinated by french language and culture this is a great place to witness real french people in their natural habitat over a cup of coffee and a tartine - it really is a gem.
