Something fun, something active and something low impact - Image: Priscilla Du Preez, Unsplash free to use
In today’s day and age, there are a range of diverse
low impact team sports on offer to people looking for something fun, something active and something social, without the need to commit to playing high intensity, competition level sport.
Recently I wrote about
walking sports , mainly walking football and walking netball, on the Sunshine Coast, where a more moderate and gentle pace of exercise is offered - still competitive, but less stress on the body.
Pickle Ball and
Disc Golf are two other fun and easy low-impact sports alternatives.

From Buderim to Cooroy, the
Sunshine Coast Pickleball Club is the Sports Club offering the fun and easy, low-impact pickleball - a sport that combines various elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. The Sunshine Coast Pickleball Club have introduced
Come and Try Days , offering FREE sessions to new players. With numerous locations, days and times available to choose from, pickleball wannabe and/or experienced players are sure to find the perfect fit.
Pickleball is played on indoor courts - Image: Sunshine Coast Pickleball Club FB
Pickleball is played on indoor courts, so rain or shine, players are covered. Courts have been set aside for newbies and the more skilled players are happy to show the beginners how to play and how to score. Newcomers to pickleball are guaranteed lots of laughs, will feel comfortable knowing that they’re not the only beginners and will be pleasantly surprised at how quick it is to pick up the sport and learn all the necessary lingo. In no time at all newbies will be going head to head with the rest of the pickleball hipsters.

Pickleball is a paddle sport you can learn in minutes and play for a lifetime. It's also a great value sport and at present offers Member Registration at only $60 per annum and $50 for seniors and juniors.
$10 for members for a two hour game or $15 for non-members. Paddles will be provided if you haven’t got one yet!
Disc Golf is popular for families of all ages - Image: www.scdiscgolf.com
Another newish sport on the Sunshine Coast that is growing in popularity everywhere and is oftentimes referred to as frisbee golf or ‘frolf’, is Disc Golf. Disc Golf is much like traditional golf, but instead of clubs, balls and holes, players use concave plastic discs and basket-like targets. The objective is to get your disc from the tee area to the target in as few throws as possible. Sounds easy enough, but knowing my skill levels on a putt-putt range, this could take all day.
On the Sunshine Coast, the
Sunshine Coast Disc Golf association operates from its new home at Meridan Downs Park in Little Mountain in Caloundra. New members are always welcomed.
DISC GOLF AT LITTLE MOUNTAIN, CALOUNDRA

Walking football is a low impact, team-based exercise - Image: www.cbwf.webador.com
As mentioned in my
walking sports article walking football is a low impact, team-based exercise, with specifically no contact between players, whilst always having at least one foot on the ground.
Baringa Football Club is the club I mentioned in the article, but I have subsequently discovered that
Coolum Beach on the opposite side of the Sunshine Coast also offers this very popular physical activity. Details are as follows:
COOLUM BEACH WALKING FOOTBALL
LOCATION: 1946-1974 David Low Way (behind the Coolum RSL and Coolum Baptist Church)
DAY: Every Monday (weather permitting)
TIME: From 5.00pm until 6.30pm
COST: No registration fees apply. $5 for the ground hire.
PLEASE CONTACT: Tony Innes on
[email protected] or 0416 097 790

Most of these activities are run by local organisations and provide awesome groundwork for building local social connections, whilst having fun. Choose to move and connect directly with individual clubs for exact locations and/or to find out how to participate.
