Friends of the Pound , a not for profit charitable animal rescue organisation based in Tweed Shire, with the support of the RSPCA and the Tweed Shire Council, are providing a low cost cat desexing service this July.

According to Friends of the Pound , if fertile cats or kittens are not desexed, in a ten year cycle two cats could effectively produce 80,399,780 kittens! It is a staggering number and leads to tens of thousands of unwanted cats being destroyed in council pounds and shelters nationwide. However, there is a simple, effective solution to this growing problem, which also prevents disease and injury, and promotes longevity; desexing.

Desexing cats is important for the community and individual pet owners as it prevents unwanted litters and if performed at an early age, can improve the general health and well-being of one's pet and result in positive behavioural changes.

Female cats can reproduce at the very young age of 4 months and if they are not desexed, are at risk of contracting the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), developing uterine, ovarian and mammary cancer and are more likely to exhibit anti-social behaviour.

Similarly, undesexed male cats are also at risk of contracting the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), developing prostate cancer and exhibiting anti-social behaviour.

If you are considering desexing your cat and you are eligible to take advantage of this program, this is a convenient and safe option.

This discounted desexing service, which is being held as part as National Desexing Month, will be provided from Monday, 29th July 2013 to Thursday, 1st August 2013 to those on low incomes, including Centrelink beneficiaries, health care card carriers and those who earn less than $50k p.a.

The RSPCA PAWS van will be at available to Tweed Shire cat owners over the four days at Murwillumbah Showground - all you need to do is make an appointment by calling 0487 179 244; places are limited, so early bookings are encouraged. The total cost is $50.
