Having a good weekend in Newcastle doesn't have to burn a hole in your pocket. Here is a list of 5 activities that are very low cost or even better, free.

Visit an Art Gallery
Newcastle has a thriving arts scene, where creative pursuits are encouraged and artistic flair is celebrated. With more artists per capita than any other city in Australia, art galleries are plentiful.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery offers Free Art Sunday for kids from 11am to 1pm every Sunday.

Head to Blackbutt Reserve
Blackbutt Reserve is a fantastic place to take the kids for the day and with free entry. They can explore and observe many different animals and creatures, including koalas, emus, wallabies, wombats and a few peacocks strutting around. Older children can participate in the Koala Encounter for an extra cost every day at 2 p.m. They can get up close and personal with one of the resident koalas.
