Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is an independent medical research facility with a history spanning more than 89 years.
This July Baker IDI will host a free public debate titled 'Low Carb & Gluten Free Diets: Marketing Con or Addressing an Emerging Health Epidemic?' as part of their public lecture series "Health Matters". These lectures aim to engage the public and inspire actions towards better health.
Both the gluten-free and low-carb diets have rocketed in popularity in recent years. Only a decade ago virtually no one seemed to have a problem with gluten and most people had not even heard of gluten.
Now millions of people around the world are fostering a gluten-free diet. Is this caused by a rise of gluten-sensitivity, coeliac disease, and other health implications? Or is gluten-free simply the new dietary buzz word with big marketing bucks behind it?
At this public lecture a panel of medical and scientific experts will discuss the extraordinary rise of the low-carb and gluten-free diet and lifestyle, and help to settle the great debate on grains.
The panel includes: Moderator: Cara Boatswain, Publisher and Chief Editor at Australian Gluten-Free Life Magazine Expert panel: Prof Merlin Thomas, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute Prof Peter Gibson, Alfred Health and Monash University
A/Prof André La Gerche, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute Prof Peter Clifton, University of South Australia
The panel will also address questions from the audience on this controversial issue. Please be sure to email your questions to email@example.com.
Bookings for this event are free but essential.
