Book 3 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series
Lover Awakened, by JR Ward, is the third book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series of books, following on from Lover Eternal. The third book picks up the story of the Brothers only six weeks after the end of the second. This book focuses on the story of Zsadist, the soulless one. The black bands, of a blood slave, around his neck and wrists are a constant reminder of the past he had to endure.

Zsadist, along with his twin Phury, were born to parents of the highest of vampire aristocracy, but Zsadist was stolen as an infant and sold into slavery. Once he went through his transition he was turned into a blood slave by the mistress of the house he has been working in. A blood slave was used for the sole purpose of blood for another, although the mistress went one step further, also using Zsadist as a sex slave.

It took Phury a great many years to find and then rescue his brother, but by then it was too late to save his soul. Zsadist had become the soulless hollowed shell that now walks the earth; no one has been able to penetrate that exterior. Zsadist's scars, both physical and emotional, is why he keeps everyone at arm's length, why he only feeds from the blood of humans, and why he can't stand to have anyone touch him, outside the battlefield. That was, at least, until Bella came into the Brotherhood's lives.....

Bella is still in the hands of the Brother's enemy, the Lessening Society. Many of the Brothers have given up hope of finding her alive, except Zsadist, the driving need to find her something that the others can understand. Zsadist himself can't explain it.

Eventually the Brotherhood does find Bella, very much alive, and the nature of Zsadist's drive becomes all too apparent. Bella is the first vampire in over 100 years who has actually managed to break through Zsadist's tough exterior, and Zsadist is responding to it. Bella is determined to be with Zsadist, despite his past and all his scars, and she must now help the lover she wants overcome the wounds of his past, in the hope that he can find a future with her.

Lover Awakened is just as compelling as the first two books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. JR Ward's books keep getting better as the series goes along. You won't find a boring moment throughout this book.
