While taking a leisurely drive through the Adelaide Hills this week we had a quick stopover at Lovells Bakery in Birdwood, in search of a pie for lunch. I was all geared up for my beloved potato pie, which I order every time I step into a bakery, that is, until the astonishing array of pies displayed in the cabinet window stopped me in my tracks.

Five full minutes later and I still hadn't made my decision. I'm not exaggerating when I say there were more than twenty different pies to choose from. After much difficulty I decided on the Bangers and Mash Pie because it was a pretty chilly day and I was after something warming and hearty. It was not an easy choice. Aside from standard types such as potato, steak and kidney and meat pies, Lovells Birdwood also offers pies I'd never heard of such as Greek Lamb, Goulash, and Thai Green Curry.

My Bangers and Mash Pie was pretty good. The mash was tasty, and the banger filling was warm and chunky and everything I hoped it would be. The pastry was a little bit hard perhaps if anything, but I went into the bakery for a nice hot pie for lunch and that was exactly what I got. I left very happy.

The bakery itself is a quaint little building, opposite the Blumberg Hotel (near impossible to miss because of the massive old red car that is mounted above the entrance). There is a dining area in a tiny, simply decorated but charming room off to the side, as well as a couple of tables outside under the porch.

If for some reason you don't like pies, you can choose from the collection of pasties, sausage rolls, scrolls and pull-aparts on offer. There are vegetarian options available.

There are also a variety of freshly made cakes and sweets, including turnovers, chocolate logs, bee stings, lamingtons, doughnuts and chocolate mousse. We bought a large berry strudel to share and it was fresh and soft and devoured all too quickly, despite its large size.

But the main thing that set this bakery apart was the pie list. On the day I visited, the following were on offer as well as the standard meat pie, potato pie, chicken pie and so forth.

- BBQ Chicken Pie
- Roast Chicken Pie
- Chicken and Asparagus Pie
- Brekkie Pie
- Bangers and Mash Pie
- Thai Green Curry Pie
- Spaghetti Pie
- Goulash Pie
- Mango Chilli Chicken Pie
- Lasagne Pie
- Egg and Bacon Pie
- Pizza Pie
- Greek Lamb Pie
- Stroganoff Pie
- Spinach and Fetta Pie
- East End (Bacon, Cheese, and Mushroom) Pie
- Curry Pie
- Pepper Pie

If you love pies or else you just love to sample unique foods, I fully recommend this bakery.

Spaghetti Pie, anyone?
