Skip making dinner on Friday Nights

"Can we go to the Markets" has been the question from my two year old daughter on the way home every night this week. It's followed quickly by dramatic but fake tears when the answer is "No - not tonight". Smash cut to Friday when the answer becomes "Yes, Yes we can" as a quick call home cancels dinner plans. Arriving home the roast chicken is relegated to cold meat for the weekend as the family lace and velcro shoes in anticipation. On the way our five year old son spots a jumping castle saying excitedly "Can we go there", "Yes mate, that's the markets". The excitement is infectious as the daredevil daughter is keen to prove she's old enough for the castle after forced to be a spectator to her brother in the bumper balls the previous week.

The kids know the game plan - castle, pizza, dance-floor, iced tea, donuts, home. "Depending on what's there" is explained with a quick definition of the word "variety" as the game plan is soon thrown out the window.

The first stall is the baby animal farm, where parents watch their step as hardened men soften at the sight of a baby goat. Despite getting there early the kittens are all taken and despite some older boys hogging them, I sure won't be separating them from their kittens.

A hand-wash is followed by the castle, where Mum peals off to order some dinner for the kids as Dad supervises the action. Back in my day we didn't have these awesome ones with a slide built in them, this should wear them out. About a million slides later they adjust to solid earth as they take longer than normal to put their shoes back on.

Palming them off onto a table with Mum, it's now my turn to do a lap and get my wood-fired Pizza. My internal monologue screams "Noooo" as news that they forgot the gluten free bases sinks in. Still there is no lack of options for a Coeliac and this is the perfect excuse to get one of those spiral potatoes on a stick that is made using a cordless drill. I also opt immediately for the one litre iced tea, knowing that I will still need a refill after the kids get to it.

Back at the table my son is crying (real tears) as he is having his own Footloose / Don't leave baby in the corner moment, as his Mum insists he eat his dinner before taking to the dance floor. With nothing left of our Caribbean meals we move to the lawn chairs in front of the live music.

I could watch kids dance for hours, it's hilarious. The wife and I also share a laugh as the kids dance to what they think is song about a train coming around the bend but the lyrics "I killed a man in Reno, just to watch him die" come through the loud speakers.

Heading back to the car I think we couldn't possibly fit another thing in, but I am reminded by my son that there is always leave room for donuts. As we leave, I wonder how many times next week they will ask "Can we go to the markets".
