white coconut markets hawthorne
Tealight delight. White Coconut image.
Picture this: baskets of cherries, jars of creamed honey, chilli sauce fiery enough to blast your tongue into orbit, tables laden with sweet-smelling candles, teacup dog accessories, tutus (for humans), crystals and curries and goat pies and generous swirls of frozen yoghurt.

All this and more is available from Love Your Local Markets Hawthorne, a series of markets that are fast gathering steam and are open for just one more pre-Christmas date (Sunday 8 December, in case you're wondering).

I visited Hawthorne's first twilight market recently and found myself entranced by the whirls of colour and glittering fairy lights, with the heat of the pre-summer's day softened by a gentle breeze off the nearby river. This is a kid-friendly and (better still) dog-friendly market, which is unusual so far as markets go, but great for people who like to include all members of the family in their expeditions.

Twinkling tealights await at White Coconut which is a cool, coastal inspired design and homewares outfit. I took home a fabric pouch full of white tea and ginger soy candles - the smell is subtle and divine.

chilli factory world hottest
It's a scorcher: the world's hottest chilli, the Trinidad Scorpion 03. The Chilli Factory image.
The Chilli Factory is another stall of note. I played it safe with the Todd River Dust (described as mild sweet chilli sauce with a heat rating of 2 out of 10) but those with more gumption may find themselves drawn to the Scorpion Strike ('stupidly hot BBQ sauce' which rates 15 out of 10 on the heat scale - no, not a misprint), the Dragon's Blood (10 out of 10) or the Fiery Frillneck Hiss ('hot smoky chilli tomato sauce' with a 9 out of 10 heat rating).

Market-goers who arrived feeling peckish had plenty to choose from, including goat pies from the Goat Pie Guy and Jamroc Jamaican Jerk Chicken . There were confections by The Cupcake Stall, iced desserts by I Love Frozen Yoghurt and delicious home-grown honey made for another sweet treat that can be enjoyed, again and again, at home.

A further bonus for early risers is the free Inna Bliss Yoga class being offered on Sunday 8 December from 8am to 9am - just the ticket for those who wish to give their bodies as well as their wallets a workout.
