What is Love Your Bookshop Day? Love Your Bookshop Day is a chance to celebrate what makes your local bookshop great. So make sure you visit your favourite bookshop on Saturday 10th August 2019 and join in the celebrations.
Love Your Bookshop Day is an annual promotional event supported by the Australian Booksellers Association (ABA) According to the Association, books play a special role in society - whether it is creating community, supporting creativity and ideas, and opening doors to other worlds and experiences, so it makes sense to say cheers to that.
In 2018, Nielsen BookScan reported that 61.1 million trade and academic books, worth $1.18 billion, were sold in Australia, with like-for-like growth up 1.3% in volume and 1.4% in value on the previous year.
While this is a national event, here are some of my favourite bookstores in Brisbane to visit on 10 August and every day to say hello and thank you.
Mary Ryans Mary Ryan's is one of Queensland's longest running independent booksellers having been operating since 1975. I love the soft comfy couches in its Milton store which encourage visitors to ponder and flick through the pages of the books and get a feel for the publication.
As well as books, it also stocks an assortment of gifts (some of which once purchased are hard to give away) and a cafe with aromatic smells which only add to the perfection companionship of sipping coffee and devouring an enthralling book. Operating through franchises, Mary Ryan's has stores in New Farm, Milton and Noosa[/B]
Founded in 2009, Scrumptious Reads is located at 92a Arthur Terrace, Red Hill, and is a literary haven for those searching for books specialising in all things culinary. You might remember it from its former headquarters in James Street New Farm.
If you are inspired by Masterchef, love to cook or just love to eat, you will find titles (with delicious, melt on the page photographs of recipes and dishes) from chefs including Asian cuisine expert Kylie Kwong, seafood master Rick Stein and Vietnamese specialist Luke Nguyen all here.

Somewhat of a literary institution in Brisbane, Avid Reader opened in 1997 in Boundary Street as an independent bookseller specialising in new, quality fiction and non-fiction books.
Over 30 years later, they continue to stock an enviable collection and also host in-store events including book launches, signings, various book clubs and introductory nights for fledgeling and established book clubs including the Young and the Restless and Bloody Crime.
Avid Reader has recently introduced the convenient and ingenious idea of opening its back deck to writers on a Monday from 9.00am till 4.00pm. For a $5 fee, you can co-work with other writers in guaranteed quiet for the entire day. There is instant coffee and tea available all day and a power-board for recharging computers. How good is that?
Riverbend Books is located at the entrance to the shopping and cafe precinct of Bulimba, Oxford Street. This delightful bookstore, with a sweet cafe and deck as you enter, offers Meet the Author events and specialist book related workshops as well as a wide variety of new and best-selling releases.
