More funny, more nooks, more honesty and less tact

I wonder how many people make a New Year's resolution about love? As I don't drink, smoke or drink coffee, mine usually relates to eating less cheesecake. It's a crazy one that I break within no time, but I've never made a new year's resolution about love! Maybe that's where I've gone wrong.

The Love Onion is a solo interactive comedy about New Year's resolutions and love performed by the endearing, hopeless romantic Dave Maney. Dave looks more like a happy scrooge with puppy eyes than an eligible suitor, but he has some tricks up his sleeve to attract his true love.

You should always expect the unexpected at the fringe Festival, so I should not have been surprised that I was given an onion on the way into this performance. Nor should I have been surprised that the solo artist arrived on stage in a onesie.

Dave Maney has a list of new year's resolutions and is full of hope that he will find his one true love in the audience. He will recite spontaneous acrostic love poems, serenade and get up to all sorts of amusing antics in his brave quest.

Dave is the master of audience participation. Within a few minutes, he had almost half the audience on stage at one time which leads me to the things I discovered tonight. One was that my carefully selected third-row corner seat did not grant me immunity to audience participation. The second thing was that my little sister, unbeknownst to me, is a talented actor. The third was a reminder that I like audience participation better when it is someone else participating.

Dave is sincere, enthusiastic, full of energy, a storyteller, singer (debatable) and a poet. When he cast his eye on me he was able to whip up an acrostic poem using the letters of my name professing that I was his true and everlasting love. My response was unconvincing, so the search went on.

As I write this review I am still contemplating the way that Dave managed to have the audience show emotions that mirrored his. The quirky music was clever and well selected. Annoyingly I'm also still humming the song 'All I want for Christmas is you!'

About Dave Maney

Dave Maney is a John Bolton Theatre School alumni and has workshopped with many well-known performers and comedians. He's a member of Po Po Mo Co (post post-modern comedy) ensemble and the queer cowboy clown duo Dwayne Justice and Jake Trainwreck.
