You're in for a treat with Love & Neon: The Cinema of Wong Kar Wai . Eleven feature films of Wong's genre-hopping filmography - get lost in stunning imagery and haunting performances. A retrospective that showcases the full scope of Wong's talent and 30 plus-year career.

Screening from Sat 16 January to Thursday 18 February 2021 head to the Art Gallery of NSW , Art Gallery Rd, Sydney for screenings from Sat 16 Jan to Sun 31 Jan and Dendy Newton , 261-263 King St, Newtown from Tue 19 Jan to Thu 18 Feb. The 11 films in the program are:

  • As Tears Go By (1988) - stylish and moody debut
  • Days of Being Wild (1990) - hypnotic tale of youthful rebellion; the neon fever dream
  • Chungking Express (1994) - filmed in a guerrilla filmmaking style and inspired by Haruki Murakami's short story
  • Fallen Angels (1995) - showcasing the romance and lust of Hong Kong at night
  • Happy Together (1997) - the achingly beautiful tale of a love affair in exile
  • In The Mood For Love (2000) - which won Tony Leung Chiu-wai Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000
  • 2046 (2004) - the trilogy's emotionally-charged conclusion (trilogy includes Days of Being Wild & In The Mood For Love)
  • The Hand (Director's Cut) (2004) - Director's Cut, a tale of obsession, repression, and class divisions
  • My Blueberry Nights (2007) - Wong's first English-language film, a soulful road trip movie starring singer Norah Jones and Hollywood stars Jude Law, Natalie Portman, and Rachel Weisz
  • Ashes of Time: Redux (1994/2008) - great historical film featuring a swordsman's sprawling tale of love, revenge and honour
  • The Grandmaster (2013) - chronicling the life of Wing Chun master and Bruce Lee's legendary teacher, Ip Man

  • New 4K restorations include As Tears Go By, Chungking Express, Fallen Angels and Happy Together. Other restorations are from Wong's 1960s trilogy – Days of Being Wild, In The Mood For Love and the trilogy's conclusion, 2046.


    Wong Kar Wai is widely recognised as one of Hong Kong's and the world's greatest filmmakers and has influenced many young directors. His craft is instantly recognisable - the way he moves a camera, inserts a musical cue, slows down the frame, just enough to break your heart – these are films which elevate storytelling to big screen experience. Fall in love all over again or discover for the first time the world of Wong Kar Wai.
