Five Different Couples, One Amazing Story

“Can you know someone more from their letters than you do in person?“

Love Letters by A. R. Gurney comes to The Guild Theatre for a strictly limited season this spring. Tickets are now on sale.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Love Letters is a two-hander drama that centres on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, who have exchanged letters since childhood.

Sitting side by side at tables, Melissa and Andrew read notes, letters and cards which detail their hopes, dreams, successes and disappointments.

The audience will be taken on a riveting journey across five decades and numerous locations as Melissa and Andrew are two lifelong friends, who share a unique and complicated relationship that is often hard to define, but one that defines their lives.

Since its off-Broadway premiere in 1988, Love Letters has attracted many celebrated actors, including Mia Farrow and Brian Dennehy, Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal, Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman, Alan Alda and Candice Bergen, Martin Sheen and Angelica Huston, to name just a few. It has frequently featured different casts in the same run.

For the forthcoming Guild Theatre production, director Lyn Lee has chosen to cast five different couples to play the roles of Melissa and Andrew. Audiences will have the opportunity to see the play more than once and experience the different interpretations.

The five-week run will commence on Friday 3 November 2023 and continue until Saturday 2 December 2023. It is the last play for 2023 and there will be Wednesday matinee performances rather than Wednesday evening performances.
