The annual Love Lawson Festival, fun and quirky
The Love Lawson Festival is a two day festival that celebrates the Blue Mountains town of Lawson. Based around the small hamlet, the Festival kicks off on Saturday morning with markets, workshops and entertainment and finishes on Sunday with a pool party at Lawson Swimming Pool. There are lots to do for all ages.
For the young kids, there are craft workshops galore, including wheel rim decorating and skate deck decorating. For the teens and young adults, heavy metal band "Grill" blasts the audience at the Blue Mountains Folk Marquee. For adults, there are local artisans selling their creations at the "Made in the Mountains" Markets. Or they may like to book the rollicking Saturday Night Gig with Guest DJ Tom Doyle, the Crowd Around Choir and some old style toe-tapping jazz from the Big Swing Band.
The festival has always been original and fun. In previous years, they had a Painted Thong competition, which was fantastic. This year carries on the success of last year's Beard and Mo competition. Bring out your goatees, mustaches and mutton chops. Sign up commences at 1:30 pm on Saturday at the amphitheatre, and judging commences at 2:00 pm. If you can't grow a beard, maybe you can draw one on.
This is also a good opportunity to see some of the local talent. On the Saturday, Blue Mountains Folk feature some great musical groups including "The Spouse Girls", so called because they are the wives and partners of the famous Spooky Men's Choir. Stay for the young folk band "Shadows at Play" followed by "Sideshow Annie" a well known Mountains group.
In the town square amphitheatre you can enjoy local school bands, a blackboard open section and the festivals first fencing demonstration, a swashbuckling display of swordplay.
On the Sunday, the festival continues with a special celebration at the Magpie Markets at Lawson Public School. Or go to Lawson Pool, its free all day and host to the festival's pool party. And if you're a dog lover, you can bring your dog to the Old Lawson Golf Club for a dog picnic and competition.
I been going to the Love Lawson festival since it commenced in 2006. It has always delighted and entertained me with its range of activities and surprising events. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and the feeling of community is a delight.
The Love Lawson festival is proudly sponsored by the Bendigo Bank and the Lawson Bowling Club. For more information, visit the website. There you will find a complete program and guide map to all the festival activities.
