Lotus Bay and its neighbour Attunga Point together form a contrast between the Canberra bushland and the colonial intrusion in the region during the nineteenth century.

During this period of history, Attunga Point was identified as having a great wealth of stone with which to build houses for the first settlers. Attunga Point Quarry is believed to have been the main stone resource for a couple of the first cottages built in the region, including William Klensendorlffe's 'Elizabeth Cottage'. Evidence of the Point being used as a Quarry can be seen in the small boulders, eroded rock face and vague dirt track.

Attunga Point is now recognised as an untouchable piece of bushland, working in tandem with Stirling Park, overgrown where it meets Lake Burley-Griffin. This spot is neatly tucked away behind the hill just inland and for this reason it is a nice spot to watch the world go by for those who enjoy a bit of privacy in their outdoor leisure.

Lotus Bay plays host to the Canberra Yacht Club, which began based at Lake George before migrating to Lake Burley-Griffin after the latter was filled during the 1960's. Before this time, Lotus Bay was the site of a small settler's farm and cottage. The cottage remained for nearly a century at the site, passing through the hands of a number of families, before eventually being knocked down in the mid-twentieth century. This paved the way for the Canberra Yacht Club's relocation.

The Yacht Club itself has a sail school, operates sailing competitions, hires out boats and is home to the Lotus Bay Restaurant, which is part of the Canberra Southern Cross Club restaurant chain.

Planning on visiting the Yacht Club at Lotus Bay? Why not also take five minutes to also visit Attunga Point and understand the history of the region.
