Sixteen-year-old Lorde is a New Zealand singer-songwriter who has been making waves in 2013. At the tender age of twelve, she was spotted by A&R scout Scott Maclachlan, who signed her to Universal Records.
After the release of her EP The Love Club in November 2012, Lorde's haunting sound has taken over Australia and the US. Her debut single Royals, a minimalist art pop song which expresses disdain for the lavishness of celebrity lifestyles, was released in March 2013, to great acclaim. Royals peaked at number 2 on the ARIA charts, number 1 on the Irish IRMA charts, number 1 in the Canadian Hot 100, and number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. She has since performed the song on chat shows such as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Ellen.
Her second single, Tennis Court, has proved that Lorde is not a one-hit wonder, and that she is a rising star of the alternate music scene. Her album, Pure Heroine, debuted in late September 2013, and has already gone gold in Australia and platinum in New Zealand.
