If you've been past Victoria Square lately, you'll have noticed the beginnings of what looks like a very large Christmas tree on the Northern part of the square. With November coming to a close, December is rolling in with Christmas in tow, and Adelaide city is in the midst of preparing for the festivities.
On the 7th of December, the Friday night atmosphere at Victoria Square/ Tarndanyangga will be alive with music and festivities as Adelaide's Lord Mayor Stephen Yarwood turns the lights on the giant Christmas tree. Organised by the Adelaide City Council,
the event will begin in the evening at 5 p.m. and stretch into the night, finally drawing to a close at 9 p.m.
The annual festivity is also in support of the
Little Heroes Foundation , an organisation that raises funds and provides support for children suffering from cancer and serious illnesses. Last year's event saw the Lord Mayor flicking the switch with Little Heroes Founding Director Chris McDermott and a Little Heroes child. If you're dropping by the event, feel free to donate a gold coin in support of the foundation.
It's looking to be a wonderful start to the festive season, a good opportunity for a family night out in the summer air. The kids will definitely have things to do, with activities lined up for them and even an appearance by Santa himself. The musical entertainment for the night will include bands, choirs and dancers, among them Melbourne based rock band
The Casanovas .
While last year's event had lanterns for decorations, this year Victoria Square will be decorated with knitting! The
yarn bombing will occur on the 5th of December, and everyone is welcome to join in the installation of the decorations, or simply to stand by and watch. If you're interested in contributing any knitted decorations or old Christmas-y scarves, they have to be dropped off by the 3rd of December at any of the following locations:
Argo on Victoria Square
Hutt Street Library
Grote Street Library
North Terrace and North Adelaide Library
Box Factory Community Centre
South West Community Centre and the
North Adelaide Community Centre
What better way to celebrate the oncoming festive season than with a fun-filled community activity? Adelaide city looks like it's quite ready to dive head first into the festivities.
