Food is not only a necessity, but a joy in life, so it's difficult to realise that sometimes what we eat can have adverse effects on our wellbeing.
Having a number of friends and family members with various intolerances, I nonetheless see this as an opportunity to challenge myself as a keen foodie and baker, and have made a number of dishes, pastries and desserts that have been not just well received but inclusive – pretty much everyone can eat them without worrying about how it'll affect their digestion later.
I recently discovered Loose Produce in Como, about 5 minutes south of the River; a great store catering for just about all of your organic and allergen free requirements. With ample parking in front of its Hobbs Avenue store and an open, sunny interior peppered with a touch of whimsy, Loose Produce is an excellent location for seeking alternative ingredients for your allergen free cooking.
With a large number of bulk foods displayed, you can buy a little or a lot, and you're encouraged to bring your own container or take part in a jar swap – handy and eco-conscious!
In addition to gluten free and organic foods there are also allergen free products including laundry, household and skin care items; it's quite an education to realise just what goes into all the goods that we often take for granted.
I was pleasantly surprised to see various products on the stands for Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods, a dedicated gluten free brand in the United States, and often a main ingredient provider in the many recipes I have sourced online when searching for alternatives.
Loose Produce also has a small in-store cafe with a delicious variety of gluten free cakes, cookies and slices, and a play area to keep the kids occupied while their parents peruse the generous aisles.
Gluten free cooking classes are also offered, and there is a kitchen on site – probably where all those lovely gluten free baked goodies come from!
You can check out their website for more information on what classes are coming up later this year.
Country orders are most welcome, call the friendly staff at the store during opening hours to discuss your order or email firstname.lastname@example.org. They will be happy to accommodate your requirements and provide further details on any items including postage information.
