Situated on the northern end of Dee Why Beach, is not well known amongst Sydney-siders and is mostly frequented by locals. It extends for almost 2km from the base of Long Reef Point to Dee Why Point and is backed by Dee Why Lagoon.

The beach faces southeast and due to its great surfing conditions it is popular amongst surfers, windsurfers and boogie boarders. The waves average 1.6m and are highest in the south and centre.

If you would like to learn how to surf, Manly Surf School offers lessons at as well as Collaroy Beach and others in the area.

Between Long Reef Surf Club and Dee Why point are usually eight strong rips, which can be particularly hazardous, so make sure you swim between the flags, where the beach is patrolled by lifeguards.

For lunch, venture to the Long Reef beach kiosk, which also serves coffee, snacks and ice cream. Alternatively bring sausages and cook a BBQ on the free electric barbecues, situated between the beach and car park. You will also find some grassy area, where you can enjoy a quiet picnic.

Toilets and showers are available, however there are no disabled facilities. You will also find an outdoor shower and viewing platform, from which you can sometimes see dolphins or whales.

Long Reef has free parking available for cars displaying Warringah Council parking stickers and pay 'n' display is available for those without. Parking cost is Monday to Friday - $5 an hour or $8 all day and on the weekends $25 all day. There are designated disabled car spaces available.

If you enjoy walking, you can either head down south to Dee Why Beach, which offers many great cafes and restaurants, a beach promenade with tables and benches, two playgrounds, rock pool and an outdoor ping pong table. Or walk north and you will come across Long Reef point with a great golf course and rock formations, which children will enjoy exploring. Break a few rocks and you may find interesting fossils. Stroll up to the top of Long Reef point and enjoy incredible views of Fishermans Beach, Dee Why Beach, and Collaroy.

Summer is a great time to head over to the northern beaches and if you haven't been there for a while or haven't visited Long Reef beach, why not pack a picnic and enjoy a great beach day with your family and friends?

Here are some ideas for picnic foods, which will make your day even more special.
