Among photography enthusiasts, the most favoured subjects are the golden hours of sunrise and sunset. Depending on the season, the sky at these hours often gifts gazers with gentle pastel hues or deep yellows, oranges and purples. This is why during sunset the jetties along Tuggerah Pde in Long Jetty on the Central Coast host a crowd of amateurs and professional photographers alike.

With two jetties jutting out towards the west, the Long Jetty foreshore gives landscape buffs interesting foreground imagery for their sunset photos. Between the hours of 4 and 7 pm in winter, and later (6-8) in the summer, promenaders can enjoy the sky exhibiting a changing of colours as the sun descends on the horizon.

The first and shorter of the two jetties, if you are approaching from Wyong Road, is called Watkins Jetty. It is named after Mr Alfred Ernest Watkins, who was also known as the Squire of Long Jetty. He moved into the area in 1905 where he had a 160-acre farm. Watkins Jetty was built in the 1920s to service the subdivision created from Mr Watkins' estate.

The second and longer jetty is The Long Jetty, which is said to have inspired the name of the suburb. It is reported to be the longest jetty in New South Wales, at 351 metres. Located at the corner of Tuggerah Pde and Archbold Street, the original version of this jetty was built in 1915 but was washed away by storms. It was then rebuilt in 1927.

We recently visited the jetties and were not disappointed. Even with the throng of camera bugs, there is enough space for everyone to enjoy the vistas. The long jetty foreshore has a few benches for early birds to relax on as they watch the sunset. There are also toilet blocks near The Long Jetty parking slots, where photos and historical snippets are displayed on the outside wall.

Next time you are in the area, try to catch the sunset here. The breathtaking views are worth it.
