Perth duo Lonely Soup Day has launched its debut five-track EP
Chocolate Bar, creating folk-rock songs they grind through a dream-pop machine to deliver a shimmering wall of sound.
Formed two years ago, all songs are penned by now-husband and wife Christopher Kenworthy and Molly Kerr with Miss Molly on the vocals and Mr K delivering the goods on guitar, bass, drums and piano.
Both have a background in the arts. Acting for more than 14 years, Molly first performed in musicals at Hampton Senior High School and has since worked with Playlovers, Groovy Boots and Harbour Theatres and the Graduate Dramatic Society in productions such as
Bedroom Farce, Perfect Wedding, The 39 Steps, M. Butterfly, He Died with a Felafel in his Hand and
The Female of the Species.
She has appeared in several short films, five music videos and three feature films:
These Final Hours, The Rag Witch and
Hotel. Molly has also performed in
My Night With Claire Danes as part of the Blue Room Theatre's 600 Seconds season and in Phoenix Theatre's zombie horror comedy
Maul of the Dead.
Christopher is the author of 12 books, including two novels (
The Winter Inside and
The Quality of Light) and the best-selling
Master Shots series. For 14 years, he directed many commercial and creative productions, including a low-budget feature film. Oh, and he's also been known to tread the boards himself.
Unfortunately, a few online trolls and keyboard warriors have taken their toll on the duo and they recently changed their website and Facebook page to say: "The debut EP
Chocolate Bar is available now but don't waste your time. It's terrible. Lonely Soup Day create indie pop songs that are widely regarded as s***. People hate our songs so much that they write every day to tell us that it's sad we ever bothered to record them. Be warned that if you like this, you're in a tiny minority."
Obviously tongue-in-cheek, it's a shame they've let the haters get to them. OzStrandedRadio describes Lonely Soup Day as "really great acoustic folk rock" and MuseBoat Radio, Smack Tongue Radio, KCR College Radio and EGH Radio have all given
Chocolate Bar a spin. In fact, it was recently the number eight most-requested song on Smack Tongue's regular countdown. And their video for
Love University (directed by Molly) has had plenty of positive comments left after people chose to watch and listen.
Their heavily
Twin Peaks-influenced video for
Line of Sight seems to have caused the biggest outrage. In relation to the video, the duo says: "Laura Palmer did not die. She escaped to the Waiting Room and will return. (The body 'wrapped in plastic' was her doppelgänger). Meanwhile, others have discovered the strange magic hidden in this small town."This video was meant to provide entertainment while we wait for
Twin Peaks 2016 but seems to annoy
Twin Peaks fans because it wasn't filmed by David Lynch and it doesn't star the original cast.
Twin Peaks fans also hate the song. The video also annoys the few people who like the song because they hate all this pretentious
Twin Peaks nonsense. Anyway, this is the official music video for
Line of Sight by Lonely Soup Day, shot in 13 original
Twin Peaks locations, as well as a room above a convenience store and The Black Lodge. We even held a monkey captive to get that final shot."
Fans of anything cult-ish can be notoriously harsh critics – witness
Doctor Who, Star Trek and so on – but the song and video have produced plenty of positive feedback as well. With comments such as "This has to be one of my new favorite songs!", "The best video and song that I have found this month!!" and "The shot of the waterfalls are beautiful, goes well with the song!" the duo must be doing something right.
The EP's title track
Chocolate Bar is a jaunty little number and reminiscent of Frente's
Accidentally Kelly Street. Listen to the Lonely Soup Day song
here and then compare it with
Frente's number .
Lonely Soup Day plan to release an album, provisionally titled
Inside This Golden Café, later this year, featuring at least 11 songs. The
Chocolate Bar EP is available for $4.95 on
iTunes and through
Amazon . You can also check out all Lonely Soup Day's videos
