When we think Veteran and Vintage Cars, we think of the Bay to Birdwood. Well, there is one car rally that has been going for a number years quietly around the streets of Adelaide.
On October 25th, The London to Brighton Down Under Run is on again. Unlike the more famous English one, we actually have nice weather to go out and enjoy it. This is an annual event held each year by the Vintage Sports Car Club of SA.
This year is the club has included veteran motorcycles along with the cars. For those who may not know, a veteran car or motorcycle are ones built prior to 1914, so these are the real old ladies of the road on show often not seen in the "Bay to Birdwood"
The cars and enthusiasts assemble at 9.30am at the Adelaide City Council Works Depot London Road, Mile End and flagged off at 10.00am, with the lead car this year a 1904 De Dion Bouton, of which I am told is just a teenager compared to others on the day.
Departing for the Glandore Community Centre for morning tea, after which they leave for The North Brighton Reserve arriving at 11.15am. At this point there will be a small presentation before traveling to Colley Reserve. At Colley reserve, the cars will be on display of both Entrants and Members Vintage Cars, where the proud owners would be happy to engage with you with tales about their cars. Who knows. you get the bug too, and want a Veteran or Vintage car too after the day for next year.
So go along make an day of it and do a little car spotting, have a chat to the owners of these classics motoring and take a glimpse into a small part of Australian Motoring history right in your neighbourhood.
What a treat for the family to have a look at some real motoring history on the move through the suburbs of Adelaide and not having to travel to far to do it.
