PLEASE NOTE: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS.
Logan is a 2017 superhero film starring Hugh Jackman in his final performance as the titular character. Part of the X-Men series of movies, this is the third and final instalment in the Wolverine trilogy following
X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and
The Wolverine (2013).
It's 2029, no mutants have been born in 25 years, and an ageing Logan (Jackman) suffers as his healing ability is failing him. Logan is working as a limo driver in El Paso, Texas. He, along with a mutant tracker named Caliban (Stephen Merchant), are caring for dementia-ridden Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) in an abandoned smelting plant. Charles' dementia causes him to have destructive telepathic seizures, which have caused him to kill people, including some of his beloved X-Men.
Logan reluctantly agrees to escort Gabriela López (Elizabeth Rodriguez), a former nurse for biotechnology corporation Alkali-Transigen, and a young girl named Laura (Dafne Keen) to Eden, a supposed refuge across the border - something that Logan tries to convince Laura doesn't exist. After finding Gabriela dead, Logan is confronted by her killer Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook), who is Transigen's cyborg chief of security. Pierce is looking for Laura, who has stowed away in Logan's limo and has powers similar to his. She, Logan, and Xavier escape Pierce and his Reavers, but Caliban is captured and tortured into agreeing to track Laura. Xavier and Logan watch a video created by Gabriela on her phone which reveals that Transigen created Laura and other children from mutant DNA to become weapons. The children proved difficult to control and were to be executed, but Gabriela and other nurses helped some escape. Xavier then reveals to Logan that Laura was created from Logan's DNA, and calls her Logan's daughter.
Whilst evading Pierce and his Reavers, the three travellers stop to help a farmer and his family after a traffic accident and accept an offer of dinner at their home. This allows their enemies to catch up to them - revealing their new weapon X-24. X-24 is a clone of Logan in his prime, and with his ailing health, is a superior fighter to Logan himself. During this initial battle, the farmer, his family and Xavier are killed, but Laura and Logan manage to escape with Xavier's body, burying him sometime later.
Logan and Laura eventually meet up with more of the created mutant children who are trying to get into Canada, something Logan doesn't want to do. He leaves Laura with the children, but when he realises Pierce is hot on their heels, he partakes in his final battle in order to save them.
This movie is the perfect end to the Logan story - many fans (myself included) have always wondered if he would actually live forever because of his healing ability. Some people might want to have the tissues handy though.
