Nestled in amongst Walkerville is one of Adelaide's newest and hip cafes. The Local Grind Café is located in the Watson, formerly known as the Highways Department Building and in later lives as the Department of Transport Building. The Watson is a multi-purpose development incorporating a hotel, serviced apartments, owned apartments and a function centre. The café is located downstairs with access from Warwick Street.

The Local Grind café was opened by Tamara Spark and Adam Rocco in September, and provides breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 7am to 4pm, and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights from 6pm. Tamara and Adam have recently returned from Melbourne where they gathered significant experience in the hospitality industry, and they have used this experience to help design the café with the creation of a rustic feel that never ages.

The menu has a distinctive Italian flavour to it, while featuring local produce. Ciabatas, Gnocchi and Crostini are amongst some of the favourites, as well as some traditional dishes cooked with some Italian temperament, and some easy cakes and danishes. The breakfast menu (known as the "Brunch" on the actual menu !) has a number of hot and cold dishes, as well as some smaller and larger sized dishes depending upon your hunger.

The Breaky Roll with smoked bacon, fried egg, cheese, rocket and house relish was a treat. When received it looked more like a sandwich with freshly toasted Italian Bread surrounding the egg and bacon, and served on a bread board. But with a quick spread of the house relish, it created a delectable combination of sweet and sour amongst the more traditional breakfast ingredients.

In order to have a benchmark for future comparisons, we also chose the Eggs Your Way dish, being two local free range eggs with toast and house made butter. This simple dish arrived on a large plate that highlighted its simplicity, without overstating the elegance achieved by the ingredients.

One item that features prominently within the Café is the wall of doors. These doors create an artful mosaic across the rear walls of the café, and provide a great talking point as internal investigations continue as to where they may have originated from.

The steady flow of coffee seeking customers who are returning from their morning walk along the Linear Path or getting ready to depart for work give testimony to the quality and efforts of the customer friendly barista.

The Local Grind Café is located less than 50m from the River Torrens Linear Path at Walkerville, and provides a great location for a coffee midway through or at the end of your walk or ride.
