Geek is the new cool, so swap freak for chic, baby

Greetings from Planet Lobos!

When you were growing up, you didn't just want to be a doctor, you wanted to be The Doctor. As you got older you found you couldn't say the words, "I'll be back," without adopting an Austrian accent. Not only that, you plan to name your first born son Skywalker and May the Fourth holds a special place on the calendar for you. Congratulations. You are a geek and that is completely cool. In fact, geek is the new cool and you'll find your spiritual home at Lobos in Northcote.

In a galaxy, far, far away... bring the nostalgia home.

Lobos is a vintage toy shop filled with action figures, unique collectables, themed memorabilia and an eternal childhood of fantasy escape. Star Wars, Dark Knight, Marvel characters, DC comic heroes, licensed Lego and rare figurines are gathered here with He-Man, The Simpsons, Dr Who, Star Trek, Terminator, Lord of the Rings, The Muppets and many others. If it was ever a movie or television show with a market for merchandise, or with a cult following, the spoils are likely to be here.

The chances are you'll find a favourite mid-century memory at Lobos.

"Many of our customers are people connecting with unforgotten characters from their childhood," says Alicia from Lobos. "Maybe their mum gave the toys away or they got rid of things themselves, thinking they didn't need them anymore as an adult, but the nostalgia for these collectables never goes away." I have to confess, a Six Million Dollar Man doll dressed in his red jumpsuit, complete with power forearm and bionic eyeball, came into view the last time I was at Lobos. I hadn't thought about that doll since I was ten years old. Wow, memories of the Barbie wedding I staged for him across my bedroom floor flooded back unhinged and now I find myself hoping he's still there next time!

Alicia meets many customers who are reconnecting with childhood joy from special toys.

If it wasn't for Lobos, I'm not sure I could have found an exciting birthday present for my son last year. At twelve, he has stopped playing with toys, but he still "appreciates" them, so a replica Arnold Schwarzenegger and a Predator doll made his day. (Apologies if it disturbs you as much as it does me, that I use Predator and doll in the same sentence.) One customer lowered his voice to confess, "We discovered this place driving past one day and have been back every week ever since." Have no shame, sir, I want to say to him as he places a replica R2-D2 on the counter, but instead I make a note to self, "The force is strong with this one." Geek currency is the collectable.

I'll be back... Some nostalgia never disappears.

Whether you are a kid drawn to the toys of yesteryear, a parent recreating childhood joys for your own children, a grown up who can't resist nostalgia or a "Hipster collector who recognises that geek is chic," as Aaron from Lobos describes some of his customers, the subculture is now legitimised. Keep watch on Lobos' Facebook page for their end of year clearance, special events and eBay sale alerts. It won't be long before you discover the life of a lone geek wolf is far behind you. At Lobos you are part of the pack. "Holy High Street, Batman!"

Your Comment
I would love this place. You said it was a vintage shop. Are they selling vintage toys, or are they newly made products for old shows?
