While filling up my car at the local servo, I spotted a sign for the Loaded Food Company and wondered what a foodies retreat was doing in the same commercial space as a BP garage, a Poolwerx shop and a liquor store. I needed to know more.



On further investigation, I discovered that the Loaded Food Company is a bespoke takeaway and boutique coffee shop in Ashgrove. Going inside, it was hard to miss the giant mural on left wall of the shop (depicting a woman eagerly devouring a sandwich). Along with being a piece of art, the mural is also a message from the owners which gives a very clear insight into the background and ethos of the shop. It seems that the Loaded Food Company supports small businesses and its meat, seafood and produce suppliers are all within 1km of the shop.



Owner Kate (who is also an Ashgrove local) is bright and vivacious and is obviously passionate about fresh and beautiful food. Her personality shines through in the care taken to provide quality products. The shop itself is small but has a fresh, modern black and white palette with an industrial look, white subway tiles, wooden shelving, stools and window bench seating which overlooks busy Waterworks Road. The eclectic personal touches set it apart from the chains. Unfortunately, there is no outdoor seating.



The menu includes lots of fresh options including wraps, cakes, protein smoothies, and acai bowls. Coffee and tea is $4:00-4.50, salads are $6.50-11:50, sambos are $7.50-9:00, sausage rolls and pies are $7.50 and milkshakes range from $3.00 - 6:00. The coffee of choice is "Black Sheep Roastery" which is housed 5km from Loaded. Loaded caters for special events including engagements, weddings, Melbourne Cup, Christmas, birthdays and can even create menus to suit what you are looking for.
