The annual Living Traditions Festival returns to North Melbourne Language and Learning (NMLL) on 20 March 2020.All are welcome to this vibrant family-friendly community event which proudly celebrates the diverse communities residing in the inner north west of Melbourne.Discover a kaleidoscope of cultures and traditions through tantalising food, live music performances, arts & crafts activities, and storytelling. Held from 6-9pm, there is a great line-up of events and activities to look forward to. Highlights include:Live music - Melbourne African Traditional Ensemble (MATE), a Pan-African music project, brings together a range of traditional instruments and professional musicians from across Africa to create new musical concepts.Using an eclectic mix of traditional African instruments, like the Kalimba (African thumb piano), a Krar (Ethiopian guitar), a Masenqo (Ethiopian Violin) and a Djembe (Ghanaian drum), MATE will have the audience swaying their hips and tapping their feet to a unique sound.Arts and Craft activities - Enjoy face painting with Fairy Freckles, Henna Art, tote bag painting, and tie dye t-shirt making. Cooking demonstrations - Pay homage to family recipes from Somalia and Egypt. Demonstrations will be provided by participants of the Connected Cultures- Empower Communities program which aims to empower people from culturally diverse backgrounds who experience barriers to employment and education.Food and drink – Indulge in an assortment of delicious cuisines ranging from Ethiopian curries provided by Zafu Foods through to Colombian fare provided by Donde Mama to Indian festival sweets.Demonstrations - View a Chinese tea ceremony and Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony. With key support from the City of Melbourne and Victorian Multicultural Commission, NMLL will bring the Living Traditions Festival to life during Cultural Diversity week (21 – 29 March).Community Development Officer, Nikki Blanch says "This is the third time we have run the Living Traditions Festival in North Melbourne. It has become a much loved annual event, which not only showcases the incredible cultural diversity of Inner North West Melbourne, but has become a showcase for local talent.The festival is run by local community members, most of whom have been engaged in a Community Development program Connected Cultures – Empowered Communities. This program is focused on building employment pathways through valuing the traditional skills and knowledge that community members have, often overlooked in the transition to gainful employment in Australia. Festival attendees can expect a wonderfully unique and intimate experience, more like sharing a family meal with new friends, than being a festival observer. You can sit and linger over a coffee ceremony and closely observe how the ritual is performed for friends at home, or take part in making pasta for a traditional family recipe from Somalia. There are many ways to get hands on and involved, and people always leave with a big smile on their face".Entry is by donation - the suggestion donation is $2.00 per person, which covers entry, all food, drink and activities.
