Entertainment discounts at your fingertips
You might like to hear about a brand new Melbourne specific app on the smart phone scene that offers members discounts on restaurants, cafes, bars, courses and activities all over the city.

Designed for smart phones (iPhone and Android), the Liven app launched on the 2nd of May 2014.

Liven works differently to the group coupon sites that have become popular in recent years. Instead of paying for each offer as you use them, Liven offers a subscription based platform where users pay a membership fee once per year to access hundreds of offers. This means that with Liven the more you use, the more you save, with the membership paying for itself after only one or two uses. Although the majority of the offers require a membership to access, the app itself is free to download and there are a number of free offers to allow new users to try the system. However we have a special treat just for Weekend Notes viewers, keep reading to see a promotional offer that will allow you to try Liven Premium for free.

Being new to the app scene means that new merchants are signing up and being added to the database all the time, with 8 new ventures partnering with Liven just last week. Merchants offer a variety of different discounts, with some offering 2-for-1 deals, some restaurants offering complimentary main meals, and others up to 40% off the total bill.

Offers from Liven merchants are mostly redeemable any day/any time of the year, allowing you to be spontaneous with your choices. You are not limited to offers near to your home, you could be out in the city or the suburbs and use Liven's 'Nearby' option to find an offer in your current location. You are also not required to advise the merchants that you will be using a Liven offer beforehand, meaning that you never have to fear that you have been discriminated against for claiming a discount.

Here is a step-by-step guide explaining the process which I followed to use Liven's premium membership for the first time last weekend, choosing to dine at a local restaurant:

1. Searched for the free Liven app to download on my smart phone

2. Clicked 'Upgrade' to obtain premium membership

3. Searched for local merchants under the 'Nearby' list

4. Found a restaurant less than 8km from my home that invites Liven members to receive 25% off the total bill, up to a maximum saving of $30

5. Clicked on the map button to locate chosen restaurant

6. Arrived, ordered and ate - yum, yum, delicious

7. Clicked 'Use Offer' on my mobile phone at the counter before handing it over to a restaurant staff member, who typed in a merchant PIN number before deducting 25% from the total bill

8. Paid, thanked the friendly staff, and went home with a content belly and close to $30 saving.

Liven discounts

To encourage users to continue using the service throughout their membership Liven has incorporated a reward point system, with points granted each time you use an offer. When you have earned enough points, you can use them to receive additional offers to visit your favourite merchants again. For example: as a premium member you might be entitled to just one offer from restaurant X, and once used up, you normally wouldn't be able to return and claim a discount again. With the reward system, you can use your reward points to redeem yet another offer from restaurant X, allowing you to return once more.

Liven is an app that offers enticing benefits for regular diners and those who like to live life spontaneously. With a great range of restaurants spread out across Melbourne, you will be sure to find something that appeals to you, with a whole range of different styles and cuisines to choose from. Besides the restaurants, other merchant offers you will find on Liven include activities such as complimentary golf balls at the Melbourne Golf Academy driving range, a great saving on a massage or even 20% discount on admission to Peninsula Hot Springs.

Although Liven is a platform still in its infancy, there are already over 100 merchants on board and the number is growing fast, meaning members will always be getting more choice and value throughout the year. I'm sure that the great idea behind Liven plus its ease in functionality will allow it to grow to challenge many of the big coupon sites we are familiar with today.

If you would like to experience Liven's premium membership yourself, we have an exclusive Weekend Notes promo code for you to try the service for 30 days. Once you download your free Liven app, tap "Upgrade" button found under the profile menu, tap "Go Premium", tap "Enter Promo Code" and enter the code WKLIVEN2014. Your one month trial membership means you will be able to try out Liven's exciting offers for yourself too as many times as you can fit into one month!

Was surprised that this code actually gives unrestricted use for a month, given how big the discounts are. Used the android version on my s4 last night at a local Thai place and was very happy, thanks for the article :)
