International cult musical comedy, Little Shop of Horrors has captured the heart of audiences around the world ever since it premiered off Broadway in1982 and is one of the longest running off Broadway shows. Opening night of Little Shop of Horrors in Melbourne at the Comedy Theatre was sensational and it was clear that the audience were completely invested from the moment the lights turned down.

Starring Brent Hill and Esther Hannaford, the comedy is bursting with dark humour and an array of charming songs including, Suddenly Seymour and Somewhere That's Green. Set in Skid Row, an unassuming, flower shop worker Seymour Krelborn (Brent Hill) stumbles across a new plant species, which he names Audrey II after his co-worker and secret crush, Audrey (Esther Hannaford). The perilous plant thrusts a hapless Seymour and the flower shop into the spotlight and threatens their very existence.

Brent Hill recently starred in the Australian production of Once and demonstrated his prowess by effortlessly moving between playing lead character Seymour and the voice of Audrey II. Esther Hannaford won the audience over with her pitch perfect performance of Suddenly Seymour and her impeccable comedic timing.

A talented cast and ensemble helped to round out the production, with special mention going out to flower shop owner Mr Mushnik (Tyler Coppin) and Orin Scrivello, DDS (Scott Johnson). Little Shop of Horrors has sustained longevity and decades on, the story is still engaging.

Brilliantly directed by Dean Bryant and choreographed by Andrew Hallsworth, the musical begs the question, "what is the price for fame and fortune?"

Overall, this is an outstanding and thought-provoking comedy that will leave you pondering its hidden messages.
