The unassuming Little Fox is a little gem tucked away in its own section of the Foodies' Nest Food Hall at Level 3 of Starling Mall, Damansara Uptown. Stepping off the escalator into the food court, the Little Fox logo and its accompanying menu catches immediate attention, being plastered on the large frosted glass windows that separate it from the rest of the food court.

Prices are relatively budget-friendly, with sets ranging from RM11.00 to RM19.00 (including GST) - each set contains a protein of your choice (with vegetarian options available) accompanied by some teppanyaki veggies, rice (with the option to upgrade to fried rice), a bowl of miso soup, a side salad and some pickled veggies, as well as some chilli and shoyu. There's also a selection of teas available and those seem to be the only beverages offered at the moment. Hot teas are served in a little black teapot, while cold green tea is served in regular glasses on ice.

Step in and you'll be greeted by a spacious and well-lit setup. It's a pay-first system, which means your first stop should be at the counter to place your order - something which could be more obvious for diners when they first step in. It's an open kitchen so you can see the staff at work preparing your food behind the counter.

After placing your order and making the payment, you'll be given a buzzer to let you know when your order's ready - which came in pretty short order. For our first time here, we ordered a Grilled Beef & Cheese set, a Chicken Katsu Set, a side of shimeji mushrooms with grilled zucchini and cold Ocha to go around.

The Grilled Beef & Cheese came with what appeared to be a slice of mozzarella melted on top, garnished with spring onions. The cheese was very stretchy - so much so that it became a bit of a challenge to eat with chopsticks (forks and spoons are also available). The beef was a little overcooked but tasted alright. The real star of the dish, though, was the teppanyaki veggies. Instead of the usual bean sprouts and cabbage you'll see in most teppanyaki places, Little Fox offers a mix of bok choy and carrots. I'm not sure what they put in this but it came out really flavourful and went well with the beef and rice.

I was a little disappointed to find that the rice was regular white rice instead of Japanese rice, which is a real missed opportunity. However the rice here is served drizzled with shoyu and some fried garlic chips, which adds some welcome flavour to it. The miso soup was fairly ordinary with some seaweed and tofu cubes in it, while the side salad had some pretty fresh, crisp lettuce and sliced red cabbage in it, tossed in a Japanese sesame dressing that also tasted faintly of ginger and citrus.

My wife went with the Chicken Katsu Set, which came with a fillet of deep-fried chicken in a panko breading. The breading was nice and crispy but overall the chicken was a little dry - but it was okay eaten together with everything in the set. A drizzle of Japanese mayo would have complimented the chicken nicely.

Being rather fond of mushrooms, we opted for a side of shimeji mushrooms and grilled zucchini, which turned out to be pretty good. The mushrooms were well marinated and nicely springy while the zucchini - though there were only 5 slices - had a really hearty, toasty flavour. We washed down the meal with some cold green tea which was fairly average - but for the price I'm really nitpicking at this point.

All in all, I really like this place. It's got a great concept that serves simple, wholesome food at relatively budget-friendly prices, given the location. At the price you can't really find too much fault in the little flaws. This place definitely ranks well above the teppanyaki chain outlets that you find around town. We'll be back one day - there's still more of that menu begging to be sampled.
