Most sandgropers have heard of Little Creatures Brewery in Freo. It's an absolute awesome set up thriving with all the chaotic buzz you'd expect to find in any establishment offering high quality beer, food and a unique atmosphere. My friends and I were regulars in our younger years and it's great to revisit now with all our kids in tow.

The place is huge. The front area is open and under cover with plenty of cool seating options. The massive indoor area has booths, lounge chairs, plenty of tables, a loft and of course the view of the spectacular brewery itself. The outdoor area at the backend has its own bar, long tables, a sandpit and exceptional views of the harbour.

We have sat in every section of Little Creatures with our own kids as well as with large groups of families and had a ball. There are no bookings so either get there early or just rock up and take your chances. We've always (eventually) found somewhere to sit and if we have waited we've still had a heap of fun.

Little Creatures is child friendly and whoever thought of converting the old boule pitch into a massive sand pit needs a medal. There truly is nothing more satisfying than watching kids play in a contained space designed for free range run-amokness. However it can get a little "Lord of the flies" and it's worth remembering that it is a busy pub and not all patrons find it cute when little Johnny zig-zags in and around table legs pretending to be a lawnmower.

This was also one of the first places I felt comfortable enough to venture out to with infants and toddlers. It really does welcome families. Ask about the kids meals if you can manage to lure your children back to the table long enough to eat.

Besides the family friendliness there are three things that have remained consistent over the years that keep us going back again and again and again to Little Creatures.

The food is tremendous, tasty and freshly prepared. Firm favourites are the eggs hollandaise and fresh apple juice for brecky, Harissa spiced lamb pizza is the bomb and we religiously order the olives, frites and marinated occy…every time! The open kitchen demands respect in all its food flaming glory and lots of cool "chefy" action is sure to grab the kids attention.

Of course it's all about the beer and the beer is great. I am not a beer connoisseur but my husband says all I need to know is that it's tasty, flavoursome and takes him to a happy place (far more informative descriptions can be found on their website). There are also some great wines and champers on offer if beer is not your thing and a little champagne brunch of a weekend morn should entice any lazy bones out of bed.

The service is great. Lots of hardworking locals and back packers are part of the mix that make for the gorgeous concoction of staff on hand to serve you swiftly and professionally. It's impressive to watch all of them weave some magic amongst the madness and still deliver your orders unscathed.

Little Creatures is a local classic still holding its own. I adore it and highly recommend it if you want to reclaim some normalcy with your kids.
