If you like a bit of peace and quiet with your weekend brunch, away from the more frantic cafe scene, Little Captain's in Inkerman Street, East St Kilda, might just dish up the perfect offering.

Squeezed into an old terrace house, the hidden winner here is the laid back hodge-podge courtyard out the back which edges onto a pretty Hewison Reserve, with its terrific fenced playground. Needless to say, the cafe is both child and dog-friendly.

We were hard pushed to choose between the avocado and sour dough combo and delicious corn fritters and thick-cut bacon, so we ordered both and shared! Coffees were good enough to order more than one, and the hot chocolate was great - not too sweet.

While service can be perfunctory at times, the wonderful, home-cooked food and bakery items produced out of Little Captain's tiny kitchen, along with its very modest pricelist make it a very welcome destination for a lazy start to the weekend.
