I like to participate in life rather than be a spectator. Music, dancing, theatre, travelling, food, cycling and walking are some of my passions. Writing is an enjoyable pastime that allows me to share my experiences.

The waterfront doesn't get any closer than at the Little Beach Boathouse. The dining area is literally over the water with expansive beach and bay views. They opened in November 2013 at the old Little Beach marina and have been serving great local produce and wines to happy customers ever since.

They have a great value fixed price menu with gluten-free and vegetarian dishes available. The daily specials include the fish of the day, an entree, dessert and ravioli. Two children's menus are available for up to 11 years of age for $20 and larger portions for $26 (up to 15), including an ice cream dessert. Children are welcome downstairs Below Deck, but there is no specific menu for them.

The food is flavoursome with interesting combinations of Asian (miso & wakame), middle eastern and native ingredients. There are seven cocktails on their list including standards such as the Mojito, French Martini and Espresso Martini but I can recommend the Sea Monster and the Lychee Mojito. Beer drinkers are catered for with a range of locally brewed craft beers and they serve a variety of Hunter wines by the glass as well as bottle.

The desserts are divine and for those that can't decide, there is the option of a shared dessert platter and we opted to replace the sticky date pudding with the daily dessert special of vanilla bean cheesecake. The staff were professional and friendly and there is a really great happy atmosphere in the restaurant.

Below Deck is the relaxed casual alternative cafe/bar for light lunches, tapas and/or pre-dinner drinks. If there are no seats available on the outdoor deck, the view is still pretty good from the inside and the food and drinks are the same.

Cocktails and antipasto Below Deck at Little Beach Boathouse is a great way to end the day.

Beaut location Janelle. There is nothing nicer than consuming a meal with a view. It enhances the whole experience.
