In the TV series
Vikings they started attacking Paris. I had to go and check if that was historically true or the stuff of Hollywood. But yes, they did. Now it seems they have set their sights on our shores.
So, if you are into Vikings and perhaps there is a secret wild streak or Viking in all of us then here are three ways to engage your inner Lagertha or Ragnar Lodbrok.
Make a Spear Like a Viking's The Australian Centre for Rare Arts & Forgotten Trades
The Australian Centre for Rare Arts & Forgotten Trades
Rob Hayes turned his love of historical arms and armour into his rare trades practice. Rob made his armour during his time as a fighter in the medieval combat sport known as Buhurt.
Now, Rob practices under the business name
& Scales and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and skills.
You can catch one of his workshops at The Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades in Ballarat.
In a forthcoming one on making a Viking Spear who can channel your inner Viking.
Throughout human history, the spear has been prolific in hunting and warfare. It holds a prominent place in our cultural memory, from Homer’s epics to the Viking sagas and Medieval legends.
In this full-day workshop, you will learn to make a historical Viking or Medieval spearhead in a traditional style using traditional forging techniques such as forge welding. You will forge your spear with a blunt tip like those used at reenactment events.
At the end of the workshop, you will take your spear home with you.
Keep an eye on The Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades for other forthcoming events.

Mjølner - Eat Like a Viking
Mjølner, is a Viking-themed restaurant in Hardware Lane, Melbourne. Rather than being corny this is an upmarket bar and restaurant semi-hidden behind a gold and black carved door on Hardware Street in the CBD. Dine under Thor’s image. With a contemporary interpretation of the Viking feasts and celebrations. Mjølner aims to deliver a unique dining experience offering guests escapism with the enjoyment of fine food and world-class beverages.
Expect to be met by a host wearing a hessian -style smock and a pouched dagger. The prow of a Viking longboat juts out from a wall, and you dine under the watchful eye of Odin.
The menu includes vegetarian options and banquets that feature items such as roasted bone marrow, spiced pig's head terrine, whole quail in Odins Raven beer, snapper with pistachio and watercress and mascarpone parfait with macadamia, charred lemon and plum.
The food gets rave reviews.
Mjølner
Dinner begins with a Stone Skål – an amber shot of stone-boiled vermouth, mead and honey and there is a bar downstairs. You can drink mead from drinking horns and choose your own weapon (a knife for a leather pouch) for cutting up your food.
There are some well-themed cocktails such as Erik the Red – port, pickled onions, red seaweed and beetroot or the Northern Lights using, gin, iced riesling, sorrel and elderflower.
There is even a dessert called Deer milk ice cream sandwich.

Roman Bathhouse - Immerse yourself like a Viking
Okay, so this is stretching the Viking theme a little. But anyone who has seen the series
Vikings will have envied King Ecbert's soaking in his old Roman bathhouse with lots of the Vikings and Viking maidens more than willing to drop their clothes to join him.
We have one Roman Bathhouse in Melbourne, the Spa De Marrakech Luxury Moroccan Spa & Roman Bathhouse at the foot of the Dandenongs.
You can bet they are not going to let any smelly Vikings in there as this is a highly upmarket and luxurious establishment. The Roman Bathhouse features a warm mineral water bathing pool (heated to 39 degrees), a steam room with colour therapy, an ice fountain (for cooling off between visits to the steam room) and changing rooms.
But you do get to bathe in complete privacy in a marble and stone pool, beneath a domed ceiling and twinkling lights. While this is not a cheap experience it sounds magnificent and might just make your special Viking moments all the more memorable.
The Spa De Marrakech is open 7 days a week.
