Lions International was founded in the early 1900s and has grown today to become a global organisation of 1.4 million members, with over 1000 clubs in Australia alone.

Many people may think of Lions being an organisation with members being predominantly older males, however times are changing. With many clubs now consisting of large numbers of female members, plus younger people in their late 20's and 30's joining, Lions Australia is becoming an organisation that all members of the community can belong to and donate their time.

One great thing about Lions that people may not realise, is that 100% of the money raised goes to their projects and charities. As operational costs are generally self-funded by the members there's no sneaky administration costs being deducted from your donations, so you can be rest assured that your all of your donations are going to a worthwhile cause. Some of the organisations and projects our local club has assisted with are:

- Outward Bound – the club helps fund a young candidate to participate in the Outward Bound course to help them develop confidence, teamwork skills and face challenges with a sense of fun and adventure.

- Youth of the Year – a nationwide competition for young people between the ages of 15-19 to develop their public speaking skills.

- Australia's Biggest Morning Tea - with nearly 200 attendees and a presentation by Prof. Ian Frazer, it was a huge success in raising money to support the Cancer Council.

- Lions Eye Health & Recycle for Sight – a programme that aims to prevent blindness by promoting early detection and timely treatment of eye diseases, plus the collection of used eye glasses that are distributed for free to those in need around the world.

- Lions Medical Research Foundation – an organisation dedicated to the funding of medical research for illnesses such as Parkinsons disease, diabetes, asthma, and cancer therapies amongst others.

- Organisation and hosting of a local citizenship ceremony on Australia Day each year.

- Emergency assistance for nationwide and worldwide disasters such as earthquakes, floods etc.

- Funding for various other projects, charities and schools in the local area.

Each club has their own local charities and projects that they raise funds for, with members able to suggest a cause that they feel needs assistance.

So next time you see the local Lions Club selling their raffle tickets, Christmas Cakes or providing a barbeque, step up to give them support, knowing that you are helping local and worldwide causes. Or maybe consider joining your local club, not only to donate your time to assist with their fund raising efforts, but to also develop lasting friendships.
