A wonderful local charity started in Wheelers Hill in 1994 and has been lending a helping hand to many needy groups ever since that date. They have distributed over $500,000 dollars to their local area, and to international groups as well. They have a few groups they especially assist including:
  • The Monash Community
  • Medical Research
  • Emergency relief such as cyclones, forest fire, flood, and earthquakes.

  • And this is done with the assistance of 1000s of volunteers who are generous with their time and nature.

They have also fund raised $36,000 to get a community bus to help people in need to get to those vital appointments in life. This has been given to Wavecare Counselling & Community Support Service and, through their auspices, several other community services in the Monash area. So if you are old, or frail, or just in need, the bus is only a phone call away with a driver to assist you with loading and unloading.

This is but one of many activities sponsored and run by the volunteers of the Wheelers Hill Lions Club. Others include:

Glenallen (a specialist school for students aged 4.8 to 18 years who have a physical disability and/or significant health impairment)
Ashwood School (specialist school educating students with a mild intellectual disability)
    Waverley Adult Literary Centre
    Monash Special Development School
    Cerebral Palsy Education Centre
    Monash Hospital Children's Centre
Wavecare (community-based not-for-profit counselling and community support programs for people in need)
Licola Foundation (Lions owned wilderness village, camps for disadvantaged children and special needs groups)
    Lions Hearing Dogs
Southern Ethnic Advisory and Advocacy Council (SEAAC)
    Mid-Eastern Palliative Care Association

    MEDICAL RESEARCH:
    Childhood Cancer
    Lions Cord Blood Foundation
    Lions International Diabetes Institute
    Bone Marrow Institute

    EMERGENCY RELIEF:
    Victorian & NSW Bushfire appeals
    District Disaster Relief Fund
Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) - Philippines Disaster

Please contact Secretary John 9803 8335 for more information.

They meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at Mulgrave Country Club at 7.00pm. And they are always looking for new members, so don't be shy, find yourself a new home away from home family to enjoy.

And once again, they have another brilliant idea to help in funding those projects. They have a bi-annual book sale. This is your chance to pick up a bargin. Forget those iPads and touch and feel the quality of a good old fashioned book and have a good old-fashioned read by the fire with a cuppa. They have over 8000 titles up for grabs, which are in "next to new" condition and will only average around $3.00 per book. Take your own heavy duty bag or basket for it will need some strength for all you will want to take home with you.

This is your chance to fill in your collection. Grab some books for your grandkids at 50 cents each. Nothing is better for a kid's learning than a big book full of colour and art with an imaginative story to stimulate their mind and help improve their reading. I will never forget my child who was a wee bit slower than the other kids when learning to read and then she found Harry Potter. Now she is a speed reader. All to the power of books and wonderful writers.

And these books are highly organised so you will be able to find that special book for yourself or your special someone. According to Marty Park, " All readers are catered for. For those who enjoy fictional works there will be a huge range of books ranging from the classics to the very latest modern titles. For the more practically oriented there is a large range of non-fiction material grouped by subject covering everything from travel, history, humour, health, self-help, DIY and autobiographies. For the younger readers there will be a selection to tempt the most hesitant book explorer grouped as suitable for teenagers, pre-teens and the 'littlies' 1-5 years."

Now mark your calendar for the weekend of Saturday 6th August and Sunday 7th August, 388 Springvale Rd, Glen Waverley VIC 3150
(Melways 71 C4). Times are 8.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday, and 9.00 am to 12 noon on Sunday. And you might want to pack a lunch, as there will so much to browse through. Enjoy, the joy.

And thank you to the Lions Club Wheelers Hill for the photographs.
